Lab & Research Interest

My laboratory focuses on the application and pathology of stem cells.  Stem cells are progenitors that could be isolated from numerous adult tissues.  They are important cells that associated with maintenance of homeostasis, repair of damaged tissues, and patholophysiology sequelae in some diseases.  My laboratory has two major areas of interest designed to aid understanding of stem cells.

Development of stem cell-based therapy

Because of their self renewal and differentiation capabilities make stem cells become hot spots for regenerative therapy.  However, the application of stem cells in clinical applications is hampered by concerns about tumor formation, ethical issues, and associated rejections.  We have isolated multipotent cells from various tissues such as umbilical cord, placenta, amniotic membrane, and foreskin.  The characterization of these isolated progenitors revealed that stem cells from different sources behave differently.  To use the appropriate stem cells in treating specific diseases and to improve the differentiation through modulating the differentiation procedures could be beneficial for developing stem cell based therapy.

To examine the effects of viral infections on stem cells

Recently, we revealed some stem cells could be infected by some pathogenic viruses.  The properties of infected stem cells are different from the uninfected cells.  We have begun to address the questions of which properties are affected and how viruses exert their influences in their host stem cells.  These findings may extend our understandings in mechanisms of virus-related diseases
